Learning to Do vs Learning to Be?
Learning to be and Learning to do are different ways of learning.
Learning to do means understanding the facts, concepts, instructions, knowledge to perform some kind of work or activity. For example, in Schools we learn biology for becoming scientists or doctors.
Learning to do helps us in mastering a particular task or activity and hence makes us capable of earning a livelihood. In schools and colleges, we are generally taught ‘learning to do’.
Learning to be means – inculcating the qualities or moral values we want to have in our character. So, by learning to be we can become excellent human beings.
This form of learning involves continuous practice of activities relating to personal development of body, mind and spirit. It contributes to development of a person by increasing his/her creativity, helping him/her in personal discovery and strengthening the character.
We see in news that many intelligent people who are in good position in the society are caught in corruption cases. Also, we see that many youths who are studying in good colleges, doing good jobs are attempting suicide. We also see that many educated people do not think about the harm they are causing to the environment.
So, this shows that only Learning to do is not important, but we also need to understand ourselves and what life is all about through experience. Let us learn to manifest an ideal way of life through learning to be.
